3rd Nephrology Update West Lake Forum – Post Event Report

The 3rdNephrology Update and West Lake Forum was highly successful. It once again brought together international experts in the fields of clinical nephrology, renal physiology and basic science research for scholarly lectures, exchange of ideas and mentoring of young scholars and trainees.

The Forum opened in conjunction with the 40th Anniversary of the Kidney Disease Center of the First Hospital, Zhejiang University. A dedication film was shown at the beginning of the opening ceremony.

The Forum faculty was comprised of 16 international and 26 domestic speakers. There were 1006 MD and PhD attendees for the Forumfrom various regions of China. Although primarily from Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Guangzhou and Hangzhou, almost a third of the attendees came from remote areas of China, e.g.,Mongolia, Yunnan and Xinjiang Province.

For each lecture, slides were projected side-by-side in English and Chinese. In addition, the Forum implemented real-time English-Chinese translations. At the end of each lecture, ten minutes were given for questions and answers (Q&A). We were delighted to see that the audiences were fully engaged throughout the entire Forum and there were many questions following each lecture. The lectures left audiences invigorated, energized and motivated. Throughout the three-day period, the Forum faculty speakers were available and approachable, providing all possible opportunities for networking and interaction.

At the conclusion of the Forum, the organizing committee distributed an exit survey, of which approximately 75% were returned. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. All of the speakers received scoresfor their presentations of >4.4(on a scale of 1-5, 5 being the highest). The audiences expressed gratitude for having learned a tremendous amount of information at the Forum and look forward to returning next year.

The organizers of the Forum plan to carry on this annual event, as it is clearly having a positive impact on the practice of nephrology in China. The organizers sincerely appreciate the support provided by the International Society of Nephrology (ISN), American Society of Nephrology (ASN) and organizing institutions.

The path to a lasting success and to achieving our goals of ultimately raising the standard of kidney care in China is a long journey. We hope this forum will not only advance knowledge for clinicians and researchers in the field of nephrology, but also motivate them to continue committing their time, talent and career to the miraculous promises of the future. Once again, the Forum organizing committee offers our most sincere appreciation to all faculty and audience for their contributions in making the Forum an outstanding success. We could not have hoped for a better team of speakers and attendees. We are also grateful for the support from the leadership ofthe ISN, ASN, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Second Military University and Zhejiang University.
